Dr. Tansy Schoonmaker grew up near Rochester, NY with her parents and three sisters. She decided to become a dentist when she was twelve-years-old. She started her education training at the University of Buffalo, where she earned a Bachelors in Science (B.S.) in Biomedical Education and a Bachelors in Art (B.A) in Physical Anthropology. She continued her training at the University of Buffalo and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Then, she completed a General Practice Residency in 2010 from The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. While there she discovered her passion for working with children and applied for specialty training. She went on to earn her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center- Children's Hospital, one of the top programs in the country. She has been working in Syracuse ever since. Dr. Tansy is a board-certified pediatric dentist as recognized by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry after completing rigorous written and oral competency examinations. Dr. Tansy is a certified laser dentist after successfully completing the proficiency course and examination administered by the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD). Dr. Tansy is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) and the Onondaga Dental Society. She likes to donate her time to community projects including Success-by-Six, a program sponsored by the United Way dedicated to providing children under six years of age with dental education. Dr. Tansy volunteers as a clinical instructor at the St. Josephs Dental health center. She has been on numerous dental-mission trips and looks forward to participating in other trips in the future. Outside of the office she enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, Sage and Shea. Dr. Tansy loves eating, reading and running in her free time.
